Comments about Outdoor Products Trailhead Framepack 8.0 External Frame Pack:

This is a highly adujustable pack. It is a traditional external frame design with standard location of pockets and large 'map' flap and cinched main compartment. Large, heavey tents or bags will twist the frame when walking. It is fine for a youth or smaller person's first pack.

I've been going on a 3-4 day backpacking trip in the fall the last few years with some friends & have been borrowing a pack so I decided to finally buy my own. As I only have been going once a year, I didn't want to spend a fortune. I haven't used this pack yet, but I'm very impressed with its feel & appearance for the money. Its certainly not in the same league as the one I've borrowed, but it cost $125 less than that one. It seems like it should be more than adequate for my intended use.

Bought this pack for the price so I could take it with my scout camping. Seems like it will be a decent pack for me. Material and construction are on the cheaper side but for the price I paid it is worth it. Not a huge fan of the plastic frame either but it will do what I need it to.

Comments about Outdoor Products Trailhead Framepack 8.0 External Frame Pack:

Picked this up on sale. I was curious...I got a really, really good deal on it from Campmor and decided that, at worst, it would serve as another "guest" rucksack when I take friends backpacking, so I had to test it. I took it on a 23 mile trip on the Pine Mountain Trail at FDR State Park in Georgia. The first problem I encountered was that the shoulder straps needed CONSTANT adjustment. About 3 miles into the trip, I was readjusting the shoulder straps about every 300 meters. I finally tied them off to prevent them from sliding out again. This made it quite difficult to take the rucksack off, but all was well until about mile 16 when the shoulder straps began producing agony. I'm not quite sure what the problem was, but I tried every trick of the trade and nothing helped. With that said, for what I paid for this ruck, I still believe this is a great purchase. Aside from those two issues, the product was fantastic. The design is fantastic- well laid out, great pockets, good frame. If you're a weekend warrior, going distances of less than 20 miles, I will tell you, point blank- you cannot and will not find a better value than this. This ruck performs as good or better than many, many internal and external framed rucks that I've paid $200.00 to $300.00 for.

Comments about Outdoor Products Trailhead Framepack 8.0 External Frame Pack:

I got a deal on this pack and am very happy with it. The frame is lightweight plastic but has been pretty durable. The pack has 3 good sized zippered pockets on the outside along with a mesh pocket built into the cover flap. There are 2 adjustable water bottle holders that I was easily able to fit 32oz water bottles in. There are two main compartments to the pack that are not fully separated which is good depending on what equipment you are carrying. The bottom compartment has a zipper opening with quick access while the upper compartment is more secure. The pack is definitely not water proof but is extremely lightweight, and I usually carry a tarp anyway. The only downside I have encountered with it is that I was hoping that one of the exterior pockets would have had some interior organization built into it, but all of them are just zippered pouches. Another thing I ran into is that because the material is so lightweight, the zippers tend to zip up the pocket cover flaps and it is nearly impossible to use one hand to zip them as I have normally had to use one hand to hold the flap out of the way. Not too big of a concern though as I still think this is a quality pack for the price.

The pad can be attached with the sleeping bag at the bottom or if too bulky, then it would have to go inside the bag.

No, they are not waterproof. The material is water resistant but will get saturated in a heavy rain. Youwould have to use a waterproof rain cover to completely keep it dry.

                    A:

At 5' a torso length of 13-14" would be more appropriate for your son. If your torso is within 15"-22" then this would fit you well.

                    To measure your torso:
Have a friend measure your back. Stand with your back to them and your hands on your hips like you are scolding someone. Your thumbs will point to a stop on your lower spine. Start from this point and measure up to the C-7 vertebrae, which is the one that sticks out of the back of your neck when you touch your chin to your chest. The measurement between these 2 points is your torso length.

This packs ability to adjust between 15" to 22" torsos would mean that at 6' the pack will very likely fit you. The hip belt will extend up to a 50" waist so the hip belt will accommodate a 40" waist.
