Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket - Men's:

Good quality jacket and is very classic looking (not flashy).

One issue I noticed is even though it's zip-in compatible, once you zip in a thermo-layer like my
Denali or Pumori jacket, there is a gap along the front zipper when the shell is zipped up so you can feel the cold seeping through the middle of your jacket. It rather defeats the purpose of being zip-in compatible and forces you to zip the mid-layer by itself in order not to have the "cold zone" along the shell's zipper line.

Another thing is the Northface logo is now printed on instead of embroidered. Not sure if this is a cost-cutting thing...

Comments about The North Face Mountain Light Jacket - Men's:

I like the jacket, however when I recieved it, the tag states the shell to be polyester -nowhere in the North Face description is there mention of anything but nylon for the shell material, one of the primary reasons I purchased it. nylon is more durable and heat resistant than polyester. I also feel the zipper could be of a sturdier construction, ie - larger to be more durable.

        • Q:

How does this jacket compare to TNF Varius guide jacket? That one is a bit cheaper, but I can't figure out if there is a difference in quality or warmth and I like the style of the other one.

            A:

The difference is price is largely a function of the Mountain Light using Gore-Tex instead of Hi-vent. Gore-Tex will breath better than the high-vent. Since both jackets are shells they would both provide little warmth. Both the Mountain light and the Varius Guide are zip in compatible. To make either jacket warm you will need to zip in a liner like a Denali fleece or a Nuptse down liner.

        • Q:

This jacket retailed for $349 10-15 years ago. Is it the same quality as then? I notice the black reinforced material does not extend up on the shoulders like it used to. Why did they change this?

            A:

The Mountain Light Jacket of 10-15 years ago was made of heavier materials. This one is lighter weight, though more durable than all the light weight rain shells on the market.

The North Face Men's Mountain Light Jacket does not come with a liner. It has a 2nd inner zipper to zip in a Denali or Nuptse jacket though.
