I recommend this with reservations. It is OK for a casual short, but if you are looking for lots of cargo room, you might want to look elsewhere.

I think this is the fourth generation of this product that I am on.

I like the old one (last model) better. TNF eliminated the drawstring (to cinch down when you swim lest you lose your pants). They also made the cargo pockets smaller (my biggest beef) and replaced velcro for buttons. Looks better, but less utilitarian. If you stuff big things in without closing the button, they fall out. The old cargo pockets were deep, and could hold stuff in even without the velcro attached. (My ideal would be big pockets, mounted higher, and with two buttons.) They also changed the waist button for a snap. I prefer the old button, as it sticks you less in the gut. Guys like me who like big cargo pockets aren't in to high fashion. That's why we buy this product. You eliminate them, and you are aiming for a different market. I'm not returning this pair but will look for a big cargo-pocketed short that doesn't scream safari, kind of what the old model was like.

These shorts are kind of short in the crotch and tight in the seat. TNF always seems to run a bit small, so I bought a size larger than I would with another brand. That didn't help. These shorts were still tight to the point of being slightly uncomfortable.

I've been looking for hiking shorts with a heavy weight synthetic material. These were not heavy enough for me. I'm not sure I'll be able to determine this online.

Sent these with my 13 year old on a 20 day backpacking adventure. They stood up great. Came back filthy, but looked great after one wash. Also all the little burrs stuck to everything else did not stick to shorts. Love that.

These shorts were a slam dunk. However, the new version is lacking. I love the older version side pocket because they closed with velcro, these use buttons. The older version also has a drawstring for the waist, this comes in handy when swimming. The new version has no strings at all.

This is a very good nylon fabric with no swishing sounds when you walk. Pockets are an issue: there is only one rear pocket, on the right, and it meant to store the shorts; there is a hidden inside pocket twinned onto the back of the left front pocket, marked for keys but big enough for a Moon Pie, you'd probably have to remove the shorts to get it out. The side cargo pockets are nicely shaped and BUTTON closing (overall Velcro is mercifully limited in these shorts).
