They are really firm and a bit bulky and I don't think he was expecting that. He also said he had issues with walking in icy conditions and knowing when he had a good foothold. The The North Face Men's SLOT WP Insulated Waterproof Boot Medium Width is not a mountaineering boot. It is a deep winter boot but more appropriate to snowshoeing and dog sledding than mountaineering. For Mountaineering use a plastic mountaineering boot.
