Third day I went to the lake to pump water and all I could get was a dribble. We were in the middle of Isle Royale and luckily I was with 2 people that had the katadyn pro hiker . If I wouldve been by myself I might have been in deep trouble. We were on an eight day trip and thanks to my cohorts it went well.

Comments about MSR Miniworks EX Water Filter:

I am a scoutmaster and have watched the scouts use multiple types of filters, pills, lights etc. All have at one time or another, asked to use my filter, which now all of the scoutmasters carry. The water tastes great, clean up is a breeze and have never once had any problem filling 6-7 1 liter bottles at a time. Seems fast, however, I know of nothing else. No batteries is a huge plus as well!! I highly recommend this filter!

    Too Much Work

Comments about MSR Miniworks EX Water Filter:

I am constantly cleaning this filter. On a recent trip through VT, I was barely able to pump 32 OZs before I had to clean - and this was with good water sources. And I cleaned to manufacturers recommendations before the weeklong trip, including boiling. While the filter works, I just hate spending so much time pumping water. Did I mention it's heavy?

Cleaning and servicing the carbon filter is a snap. The only down side is the rate of filtering at around 1 quart per 3 minutes. The MSR Hyperflow is almost 3 times faster - but less rugged.

used this on a.t. thru hike and the weight was well worth the piece of mind. Knowing you will not be sick from water borne illness. all too often I watched many hikers fall ill and have to quit or have alot of downtime from not filtering their water or trying ultralite methods. Do not skimp on sleeping bag rating, stove, water filter or boots. and remember. The stream is clear and beautiful. But (maybe) full of microscopic nasties you cannot see.

How do you know when it's time to replace the filter? Do you have to keep track of how many gallons you've filtered through it?
Asked on 8/27/2013 by backpacking Dan from upstate NY

                1 answer

                  A:

You will know it's time to replace the cartridge because it will become very hard to pump. You may run into this several times in the life of a cartridge which will mean you will need to clean the ceramic covering. The advertized volume of throughput for this filter is for the activated charcoal part of the filter. Sometimes water contains a lot of tannins which will fowl the ceramic sleeve. Cleaning the sleeve will return the filter to proper performance.

I just need to make sure this is the filter that fits onto the Nalgene bottle. I can't seem to find the filter I have had, and all I remember is the brand and that it screwed right onto my bottle.

My question is this, does the filter have the ability to be sanitized and reused?
As you know, when one is out in the back woods and there are no more filters to be had, can the existing filters be cleaned, sanitized and reused? This is important to know.

There is a ceramic collar around the activated charcoal..You can clean larger tannins of the ceramic however the activate charcoal which filters the smaller pathogens can only be back washed several times before you would need to replace it. That is why there is a flow through capacity of 100 gallons.

                looking for a replacement part...

the WEIGHT that goes on the end of the hose to keep it in the water...we have lost this, which makes it difficult to use this without two people (one to pump, one to keep the hose in the water).

                thanks.

I will be backpacking with several people having various types of water containers. an you connect a hose to the output of the MSR Miniworks EX to fillter to a narrow mouth bottle or camelback that does not thread to the bottom of the Miniworks filter like the Dromedary Bag or Nalgene water bottle. I don't like the idea of "aligning" the filter with a bottle as you try to pump the filtered water......

This does not have an output tube so if you use a receptacle other than the msr bottle, you would have to hold the bottle up to the base of the filter to avoid lose of filtered water.

The threaded output end of the miniworks will not mate up to a Camelback reservoir. You can hold the output end over the reservoir to fill it that way.
