Comments about MSR AutoFlow Gravity Filter:

I have used other MSR gear and found them excellent. This brand-new water filter worked fine for about 8 to 12 liters, then clogged. I was using it in the Boundary Waters for a 2 week trip. Lake water had some tannic acid, but was clear in general. After about 12 L the filter began to run very slow, After about 20, if would have been faster to boil water, and I had to use filters from others in my group. I feel like this purchase was a bad deal. Katadyn for the next filter - this one is trash.

Comments about MSR AutoFlow Gravity Filter:

Overall its a good product. It can hold and transport 4 liters of water easily for later use maybe even 5 liters if you took the time to press air out. Filter cannot be removed however to be cleaned you must use your clean water to backflush the filter. For some reason the filter drips a little (maybe just mine?). TIP sedement can be hard to deal with. Put the dirty water in something else and let the sediment settle before slowly pouring it into the filter bag.

For backpacking: Holds enough water for filling 4 water bottles (24 oz) plus cooking for two with some left for washing dishes. Holds 4 liters plus.
No bending over to pump water into individual bottles, pots, pans etc. just hang it on a tree. Lightweight. So glad I chose this style. Great value for price.

How often do you need to backflush the filter, and how often would the filter need to be changed? I realize these will very widely based on the water being filtered. I'm assuming relatively clear-looking water or pre-filtered with a bandana to get the worst sediment out.

                        Thank you

When the flow needs added pressure, this would indicate you need to back wash. Of coarse back washing would be needed if the water is more turbid. Less turbid water would require less back washing.

I bought this filter and have a question about backflushing. When I went to do it, the hose became airlocked and I could not get the water to flow thru. When I lifted the filter above the water bottle, it helped a little but the water was again, only a bare trickle. Is the backflushing process supposed to be extremely slow?

One thing you can do is to use roll down the water reservoir to increase the pressure on the water. This should increase flow.

You could try lining the opening with a bandana to get out the gross debris and then the filter will take out the small particulates.

Just turn the filter around so the dirty water input side is facing the reservoir which has been cleaned. Gravity feed clean water out to a container. Must have the reservoir clean first though.

There's an easier way explained in the instructions: You use the "Universial" connector thing that comes with the filter (screws onto nalgene bottles and other things) to collect about 1/4 liter in the bottle, then you just lift the bottle above the filter and the flow reverses, backflushing the filter.

You'll also need to clean the pre-filter sometimes.
