Comments about Vasque Clarion GTX Waterproof Hiking Boot - Men's Wide:

I would start by telling you that I am female, with big feet, and even women's 11 wide do not always "foot the bill".

I am a Rural mail carrier and am on my feet for 3 or 4 hours in the office, before I leave for the street. These boots are very comfortable for my standing time in the office, and warm, stable, and have a good tread, for when I have to get out of my vehicle to deliver parcels.

Even though this boot is a slightly different style to my very old boots, it is up to par.

Comments about Vasque Clarion GTX Waterproof Hiking Boot - Men's Wide:

I use these boots around my property and for day hiking. Excellent fit and comfort, have used this model of Vasque boot for many years on my small acreage. I live in the western desert where breathability of the boot is more important than water tightness. These boots don't breath as well as the old non-Gortex model did. As another reviewer said, sure wish we could get these boots without the Gortex lining. That being said, these boots get more use than my other five pairs of hiking boots combined.

Replacing a worn out pair, I'm sold on vasque. Working on a family farm the boots go on in the morning and generally stay on. Feet stay dry and warm. Can be walking behind a push mower one minute, then driving a tractor, then chasing a calf these boots are light weight and sturdy.

Comments about Vasque Clarion GTX Waterproof Hiking Boot - Men's Wide:

Break-in was almost immediate. Very comfortable from the start. Good support. All even though I have a difficult foot to fit. I have a different style of Vasque boots that I'm happy with, but I'll be switching to these.

This type of sole is excellent for traction off road, but the compromise is that it wears down more quickly than normal street shoes. So I recommend these for off-road use only.

I carry loads from 35-50 lbs on top of my sveldt 300+ lbs. They've lasted me over five years and they're still going great. I hike around 100 miles per year. Am planning a much longer hike later this summer. Hope the tread doesn't disappear before the trek is done.

I have warn the Clarion GTX boots for over 20 years, not the same pair though. Worn every day a pair will last a year, then I order a pair from Campmor a month before I need the new pair. My only fear is that one day Vasque will discontinue the GTX, then what will I do. From the day I put a new pair of these boots on they always feel perfect. From this you would think I like these boots well, you are wrong, I love then.

This is a high volume boot. The regular width in the Clarion has been known to be wider than other boots that come in a wide size. The length runs true to size, and we recommend your regular boot size when making a selection.

I am heading out to Philmont BSA High Adventure camp for a 12 day backpacking trip. I am new to the backpacking world. I need to know if these boots would be good to hold a 40-60 lb. load a day for about 5-15 miles a day. What are the good and bad parts about this boot?

                            • A:

This boot will work and you should be able to do Philmont with less than 45 lbs due to resupply. Gear down the load and enjoy the trip more, etc. The clarion is really a loght back packing boot that would serve your needs at Philmont, but the sturdier Vasque Sundowner or Danner Mountian Light will take more load. I've used the mountain light by danner for 25 years now. My wife wears the vasque sundowner, 25+ years. In the end, fit and comfort should be your guide. Any of the boots above will work and offer water proof gortex liners and are proven by the test of time. Recommendation: Try on several and go with what feels best (out of the mid to heavy weight boots.)

This boot can carry a maximum pack load of about 40 lbs. You would want to look at a sturdier, mid weight boot to give you the proper support.
Below is a link of an alternate boot that would provide better support for that size load.

I will be taking a 12 person crew to Philmont (Boy Scout High ADventure base in New MExico Mountains) next June. I need to outfit 11 of those 12 with really good hiking boots. since you are an online store, what is the best way to size and select boots. I am tremendously partial to Vasque since I have a pair and they performed magnificently when I went ot Philmont before.

                              A:

                              FITTING YOUR NEW BOOTS:
First put on the socks you are going to wear with your boots. A lightweight wicking liner sock made of wool, polypropylene, coolmax or silk, followed by a mid to heavy wool or wool blend sock seems to work best.

Always keep in mind that new boots tend to get wider and shorter with age. This is because the upper tends to stretch in width with use, but the toes tend to curl up as the boot gets older. It is important that you don't get boots too short or wide to start with.

Now put your foot into the boot. With the boots unlaced, push your toes forward until they are right up against the front of the boot, slide your index finger behind your heel. It should easily fit, if it is difficult or you can't do this the boots are too short-send them back. If there is much more room than this they are most likely too large.

Next tap your heel back into the heel cup. You should always do this before lacing your boots. Lace the boots snugly going from bottom to top, your heel should not be able to lift much more than 1/4 inch. Excessive heel lift the boot is too long or too wide. The boots should feel snug in the ball and the ankle, as these areas are where the boot will break-in.

Lastly check the toes by kicking on them or by walking down a 45 degree incline. Your toes should not jam against the front of the boot. You should feel slight pressure on impact but not a sharp stab. Try lacing your boots tighter over the instep. If this does not work the boots are too short or too wide.

One rule of thumb given by our customer service people is "if the boots don't feel comfortable out of the box they are not going to fit-send them back". Boots do break-in and become more comfortable but no amount of break-in will make an uncomfortable boot comfortable. Note, improperly fitted boots will cause pain, blisters and also excessive wear to your boots. If you have any sizing questions, please call our customer service department at 800-525-4784.
