Comments about Kelty Tioga External Frame Pack:

This replaces an older design Kelty that finally wore itself out over 20 years. It was my go to pack for trail walking and leading scouts. It didn't lend itself well to ski touring or rock scrambling, but ate up a lot of trail miles.

I like several improvements that are built into this one, most notably the water bottle pocket and the top map pocket (at least that's what I use it for). Also it seems a little easier to pack my sleeping bag into, though I'm not sure why.

It's still not easy to adjust, lots of fiddling, but it adjusts to unique physiologies.

It's still not stylish, unless retro is a style, but the design may never become obsolete.

Comments about Kelty Tioga External Frame Pack:

I am a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts. My son and I backpack frequently on camping trips and have a major 70 miler coming up in June. While internal frames are the most popular right now, we still like our external frames for setting the pack on the gound in wet weather conditions. We also don't tend to sweat quite as bad as on internals. Great all-round pack.

Comments about Kelty Tioga External Frame Pack:

This is an updated version of the big Kelty pack I used for 25 years. I have an internal frame pack, but I find carrying a tent, pad, bear cannister, and sleeping bag just easier to pack and carry with a big external frame. Only used once so far, but the nylon material and frame are very heavy duty and I bet this will be the last pack I ever buy.

Comments about Kelty Tioga External Frame Pack:

Last of the big external frames ~ 5500ci or ~ 90liters. However, it's got a to. Of external lashing space on top of the bag on the upward expanding top frame, as well as below the pack on the bottom part of the open frame. Got it while it was still available since it's not made anymore. These are more comfortable IMO then the big internal frames, wish they would still make these. Fits inside an Osprey Airporter (large) for extra protection when checking on an airline. The rings that hold the pins can be hard to manipulate for adjustments, but I guess it does ensure they won't come out; once you have it sized it won't matter. Large expanding sleeve on top. Separate compartment at the bottom for sleeping bag or thermipad if you choose not to lash them below the pack.

Wish the hydration sleeve was built for the more standard size (long, narrow) camelbak or osprey type bags, but instead it's wide(width of pack) and short. I got the mil spec camelbak 100oz antidote short bladder for it as the long std size bladders may not work well. The antidote lumbar reservoirs 100 oz or 70 oz actually should fit better than the mil spec, but I wanted the insulated tube and detachable mouthpiece on the mil spec that would cost extra on the lumbar std models.

Simply a great pack. If you want a large external frame, get it before they are all gone.

After extensively searching for a good external frame pack for my son, I purchased the Kelty Tioga for him. A pack he could use now, but wouldn't outgrow. I've used the same pack for over 25 years and was so jealous of the one I got him that I ordered one for myself.

I really like this pack for a bunch of reasons. For starters; your sleeping bag, tent, and pad can all get lashed securely to the outside of the pack. I dont like compressing my expensive sleeping bag down super small (damaging the loft), and now I don't have to! Great color too, very woodsy/military. Not bright.

Comments about Kelty Tioga External Frame Pack:

I finally wore out my old 1971 Kelty pack(frame still great!) after 40+ years. I stayed with the external frame version after reading many reviews of internal/external due age factor. The things I like on the new Kelty are: 1)the larger size, 2) the side pocket layout, i.e., one long one, one regular one, one H2O one - on top right side(allows easy access while walking on trail by reaching over shoulder), 3)comfortable waist belt, 4)vertical sizing system depending on gear amount, and 5) lots of lash-on capability as you would expect with external. Concerns: while water proofing looks good, need to confirm in rain(ugh!). Dislike: no bag dividers like my old one, really need those on large packs without front panel access.
Overall, looks like another great Kelty pack I will enjoy for a long time (probably out live me!).

Kelty seems to have been making good equipment from before I can remember. This pack is top notch again, but I think it is discontinued. If you need a big frame pack, this is it. Extremely large, fully adjustable, very comfortable, and light with plenty of pockets. Careful though: Trying to fill the pack can make for a very heavy load.

                                        A:

The waist range on this pack is 26" to 48". and the torso range is 16-22 in. As long as either people would fall into these ranges the Tioga would work.

                                        To measure torso:

Have a friend measure your back. Stand with your back to them and your hands on your hips like you are scolding someone. Your thumbs will point to a stop on your lower spine. Start from this point and measure up to the C-7 vertebrae, which is the one that sticks out of the back of your neck when you touch your chin to your chest. The measurement between these 2 points is your torso length.

The Tioga has an aluminum external-radial frame, which has more suspension/adjustability capabilities. The Trekker has the classic aluminum external frame.

Does the new Tioga have the through pockets on the side. It seems there is no mesh at the bottom to land long items like a fishing pole or long knife behind the long pocket or the other two side pockets like there used to be on previous models?

This pack is similar to the Super Tioga in capacity to the 5600, but there is a difference of 100 cubic inches. This pack is made in the Philippines.
